Early in 2005, a group of Christian parents with the desire to develop an excellent, independent Christian education alternative in the greater Presque Isle area began to meet. Much work and planning was accomplished and, in the fall of 2006, Cornerstone Christian Academy opened its doors to twenty students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 and one student in Grade 11. The school operated in leased space at the Family Christian Center in Presque Isle. A video-based Christian curriculum was used by four volunteer teachers the first year of operation. This curriculum was continued for one more year but with a paid staff of teachers, after which traditional classroom instruction was instituted and continues to this day.
Due to space constraints in the leased location, the Board of Directors began the search for the school’s own facility in 2010. An 11-acre piece of property at 180 Houlton Road in Presque Isle became available and was purchased by an investor for the school’s use. Although the property included a building which housed a gathering room, office space, and bathrooms, it lacked classroom space. A building was designed, a contractor was hired and the school broke ground on a classroom wing in December of 2011. The addition was completed in time for school to begin in the new facility in September of 2012.
Since moving into our new facility, Cornerstone has grown from 36 students to 66 students, with a staff of nine teachers and two classroom aides. We now offer a full program that includes PreK through Grade 12 and our students enjoy activities such as weekly chapel services, service projects in the community, band, chorus, music, art, drama, and physical education. Although we are not able to offer an athletics program at this time, many of our Middle School and High School students participate in a variety of MPA team sports through their local public school districts. Students in lower grades participate in sports programs provided by recreation departments.
The 2016-2017 school year marks the beginning of CCA’s second decade! As we look forward to the future we are also very proud of our past. We held our first high school graduation ceremony in June of 2016. Some of the graduates had been attending Cornerstone since 2007. They are currently attending institutions of higher learning such as the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Northern Maine Community College. One alumna recently completed her training as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Cornerstone Christian Academy continues to serve as an extension of the Christian home, seeking to educate the whole child – spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. The Academy teaches its students Christian values and assists parents in developing their child’s Christian character within the framework of a sound academic education. Our teachers are caring individuals who have a growing relationship with Christ and demonstrate a life of service and love to the students they teach. Along with quality academics, we provide a safe, secure, and respectful learning environment.
Cornerstone Christian Academy has been a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) since 2006.
